Spot The Ball Controversy As Jackpot Not Won For Ten Years

At its peak, 3 million people would play Spot the Ball each week, trying to estimate the exact centre of a football from a picture of a game in progress. With a £250,000 jackpot prize for anyone placing an 'X' in the correct place, it was one of the major competitions across the UK, but since the advent of the National Lottery player numbers have dropped sharply to around 14,000 a week. Now, the competition is embroiled in controversy, as it has been revealed that the main prize hasn't been claimed for over ten years. How the Story Broke The issue came to light when a punter who has wagered £2.50 every week for 11 years confronted the organisers of the draw with the fact that he has spent an estimated £11,300 over the years, winning a single £10 prize and a couple of £2 prizes. Pete Cook, a retired newspaper editor and commercial manager for Tamworth FC was getting increasingly exasperated with his lack of success and decided to ask the organisers when the £250,000 prize was last claimed. ''I was absolutely gobsmacked to find out it was in 2004'' Mr Cook said, adding that ''Someone must be coining it in if there's been no big payout for all this time.'' Response From the Organisers Spot the Ball organisers, Sportech, which is now owner of the Littlewoods group, have responded by saying that the lack of winners is simply a reflection of the drop in player numbers and that in the last 10 years over £16 million has been paid out to players who have been closest to the centre of the ball. The company is also fighting a battle with the Inland Revenue, arguing that because Spot the Ball is a game of chance, not skill, it should be exempt from paying VAT.

UK Gambling Sites Blocked by Over-Zealous Filters

The online gambling industry in the UK is still adapting to the new gambling laws introduced in late 2014, but now yet another blow lands. UK Internet Service Providers (ISPs) have set their sights on online gambling sites for blocking due to their "adult themes", this after PM David Cameron initiated a campaign last July to prevent children from easy access to pornographic and violent material on the net. Over-zealous Blocking Filters The alleged adult content found in online gambling sites and online casinos is filtered by over-zealous filters placed by the ISPs. If you ever wondered about the "sexiest" online casino on the net, that title must be given to bet365 Casino because it seems that no less than four UK ISPs blocked it in their filters. Blocking Trend in the UK The recent developments in the UK site blocking trend is not a new issue. Last year, Forbes reported that the "porn filters" used by ISPs in the UK block one fifth of the country's most-surfed websites, even if they have absolutely no connection to any adult subjects or pornographic material. In some cases, websites of churches, charities and help and support sites were blocked. The Fight against Arbitrary Blocking The issue has gotten so severe that the UK Open Rights Group has raised the flag in the fight against the filters which affect many clean websites and hurts those whose income is based on online advertising. With the public uproar and the fact that not all filters have been introduced amongst UK internet users, one can remain hopeful that the over-zealous filters will be toned down sooner than later.

UK Gambling Commission Looking at Tighter Gambling Rules

The UK Gambling Commission (UKGC), has announced that it is looking at the online betting industry to focus more on avoiding problem gambling issues. A number of updates to the Licensing Conditions and Codes of Practice have been recommended and they will be officially launched on May 8th 2015. New Regulations The review was carried out in 2014, as the UKGC became the body that oversees all British-facing igaming operators. The main outcome of the review is that the UKGC wants greater protection and support for those at risk from problem gambling, with improved measures to prevent minors from gambling online, and improved self-exclusion facilities for those who want to limit their spending. The Commission is also looking for operators to provide annual reports on what steps they are taking, with figures to back up the success or otherwise, plus tighter controls on advertising to ensure it is not misleading. Anonymous gambling, where players and operators keep track of their spending, is a major concern for the UKGC. The Commission Chair Phillip Graf has said ''The work we have done through the review represents a significant strengthening of the social responsibility measures in the LCCP. But we have reached a point at which it is clear that much more could be achieved if anonymous gambling in cash was not such a prominent feature of land-based gambling.'' The Swedish Model Similar regulations have been implemented in Sweden, and although it led to an 8% drop in income for Svenska Spel, the country's top igaming provider, their CEO believes that over time it will improve the market for all concerned.
