It invites players to talk about their gambling habits and to equip themselves with the knowledge and tools to take control and gamble more safely. Key Points of Safer Gambling Week The campaign will focus on a number of key parameters to help players in the UK, and Northern Ireland enjoys online gambling responsibly. These include setting limits on spending, and they point out that over 400,000 players do this every month. It's also made clear that gambling is not a way to make consistent money, Players may get lucky now and then, but that's just what it is - luck. No-one should gamble with money needed for essentials, such as food, rent, or bills. It's purely a fun pastime and players should only stake money that they can afford to lose. The organisation also promotes the option to take a break. Anyone who feels they have an addiction to gambling can self-exclude from approved sites and give themselves time away from online gambling. Clearly, friends and family should take preference over gambling. Part of the campaign is making players aware that they should enjoy their time away from sports betting, casinos, Poker, or Bingo. Know the Warning Signs The Safer Gambling Week website carries a comprehensive list of warning signs. These include spending more than affordable on gambling, arguing with friends and family about it, having gambling always on your mind, and borrowing or selling possessions to fund the habit. The UK online gambling market is well-regulated, and all licensed operators have links to gambling support services such as GamCare. Land-based operators will also have advice, leaflets, and helpful staff available. Take Action Players are guided towards helplines and other services. GamCare offers an online forum and chatrooms. Players can also self-help with a number of proven tools, such as setting gambling limits, blocking gambling sites, or blocking gambling payments with their banks. The National Gambling Helpline is a free service, and players in the UK and Northern Ireland can get help 24/7 with a call to 0808 8020 133. In the Irish Republic, the Dunleway Substance Abuse Center offers an equivalent service on 1800 936 725 9am-11pm, 7 days a week. Other options include the Gambling Awareness Trust and Gambling Care. The UK Safer Gambling Week starts on October 17th and is there to raise awareness of the signs of problem gambling and the help available.
The gambling industry is awash in tributes to the recently departed Queen Elizabeth II. All iGaming Remembers Groups and operators from the iGaming industry are paying tribute to Queen Elizabeth II, who passed away on September 8th at age 96 to conclude a reign that began 6 February 1952. The Thoroughbred Connection Upon news of her passing at Balmoral Castle in Scotland and the ascension of her eldest son King Charles III, many UK iGaming organisations began publishing tributes to the queen, who had a unique personal interest through her passion for breeding horseracing thoroughbreds. BHA Tribute The British Horseracing Authority (BHA) initiated the tributes by remembering the queen’s roles as a patron of The Jockey Club and Thoroughbred Breeders Association and as the figurehead of the Royal Ascot racecourse. BHA Leader Speaks BHA Chair Joe Saumarez Smith extended his condolences to all affected by the sad news: “Racing owes an incalculable debt of gratitude, not only for Her Majesty’s dedication and commitment to the sport but for her public advocacy of it, something that doubtless has driven the sport’s popularity and attracted a great number of fans. Popular to Horseracing Circle Smith lauded the many who work in horse-racing “who have enjoyed relationships with her majesty through the training and breeding of her horses and will be grieving.” Day of Remembrance The BHA further suspended all racing activity across Great Britain on September 9th in solemnity for the day. ARC Tribute Arena Racing Company ARC commemorated the queen’s connection to horses and racing as well, through the words of ARC chairman David Thorpe: “Throughout her life, Her Majesty the Queen was a figurehead not just for British horse racing, but for the nation.” Gratitude and Peace Thorpe expressed his organisation’s deep sadness as he expressed “the deep gratitude of myself and all at Arena Racing Company for her unwavering support for, and appreciation of, British racing over many decades. May she rest in peace.” William Hill Appreciation London bookmaking giant William Hill lamented losing the country’s longest reigning monarch and called her “an important and steadfast figurehead during times of massive change.” Clarion Condolences UK-based iGaming event and content provider Clarion Gaming sent the organisation’s thoughts and condolences to the royal family and the rest of the country at this sad time. Outlook Onlinecasinoreports.com can only add to the condolences by respectfully remembering the monarch's benevolent guidance in shepherding a jurisdiction that grew into the industry’s largest and most socially progressive market and enabled the reporting of so much groundbreaking news for so many years.
According to Dave Woods, editor-in-chief of the popular Poker Player magazine has suggested that the UK poker tour circuit is in the ascendant. This contrasts sharply with the poor numbers being reported from similar tours in the United States. Woods stated that the Grosvenor UK Poker Tour and the Gala Casino British Poker Tour have, "both been doing really good numbers." Woods further remarked that the European Poker Tour, which receives its London debut in a few short weeks is "the big success story at the moment." He added that this tour had become extremely popular with poker players over the course of the last several years. Leading up to the World Series of Poker (WSOP) tournament in 2008, several observers had predicted a decline in world poker numbers. In spite of this, the WSOP recorded record attendance at the 2008 event, which has encouraged organisers and poker enthusiasts across the globe.
PKR.com, the London-based online poker room has issued results that nudge it ahead of the competition from other UK online gambling rivals. The company has even forged ahead of leading British online gaming giants - a remarkable achievement considering PKR.com's short two-year history. With the success of newcomer PKR.com, there is clear evidence that the UK's online gambling is set for further growth. Since August, 2007, PKR has signed up over one million new subscribers, bringing their total membership to two million - a remarkable achievement for a market newcomer. This statistic places PKR in the league of the UK's fastest growing online gaming Internet sites. The site, which does not accept US members, illustrates the popularity for online gaming in the European market. In July of 2008, PKR surpassed top UK online titans Ladbrokes and Betfair to become 15th in the ranking of global real money Internet poker websites. In addition to its online gambling operation, PKR has followed the lead of a number of US online gambling operations in opening a TV channel, which has the potential of providing access to an audience of 15 million people across Europe. A further smart marketing move has been the launch of its own magazine, called Stacked, and a loyalty program club that provides its top clients with special bonuses and game tips. Clearly PKR is an online poker room that's going places, and it's going there fast...
Ladbrokes, the UK-based online gambling operator has recently announced a plan to move from running a stand alone poker room to the integrated model supported by the Microgaming Poker Network. Microgaming has developed a system of combining many poker streams into one pool which enhances end user game player and flexibility. John O'Reilly, Ladbrokes' managing director announced the move that is seen by many as a protest against the UK gambling giant's outdated policy of using a solo poker room, which markedly affects the game liquidity. O'Reilly stated that, "Most of the poker rake is generated by the high stakes players and we have taken the decision to offer them US liquidity from those individual states where there is less of a legal risk." He added that his company had assessed the legal implications and felt that joining the network would benefit the company and its customers. Ladbrokes' online sector profits were flat for the first half of 2008 at 26.2 million pounds, year on year. The lack of profit growth was attributed to the money being spent on the acquisition of new online gambling customers during the first half of 2008. The group's pre-tax profits for the first half of 2008 fell from 192.7 to 170 million pounds against the same period in 2007.
The Gambling Act 2005, which came into operation on September 1, 2007, allowed for 17 new casinos to be built in Great Britain - eight large casinos, eight small and one regional. There were already more than 140 casinos in the United Kingdom prior to the law passing. The Act's stated objectives are: to prevent gambling from being a source of crime or disorder; ensuring that gambling is conducted in a fair and open way; protecting children and vulnerable people from being harmed or exploited by gambling. The Gambling Commission was set up under the Act to replace the Gaming Board for Great Britain as the regulator of casinos, bingo, gaming machines and lotteries. It is sponsored by the government's Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS). The Act also put in place a system in which casino operators must obtain a license from the Commission, and the majority of senior management and staff who are directly involved in the gambling side of the business also need licenses. Casinos in gambling-friendly Britain recorded over 15 million visits in 2006/07, with over 4.3 billion pounds exchanged for gaming chips.
Christmas has arrived early this year at UK bookmaker Ladbrokes, with separate odds being offered on the chance of snow falling in five British cities on the December 25 holiday. Under the heading "White Christmas", bets can be made on snow falling in London, Manchester, Liverpool, Birmingham and Glasgow. London is considered the most likely to experience snow with odds of 7.00. Glasgow has odds of 8.00, while the other three cities carry odds of 9.00. This is not a competition between the five cities - snow must only fall on the weather centre in the city of choice on December 25 for the bet to be successful. Bets can be made on multiple cities, in the hope snow falls across Britain, covering more than one of the cities. The odds are once again stacked against a White Christmas for Britain. In London, snow has only fallen between December 24 and 26 on 18 of 108 Christmases since the beginning of the 20th century. In years when snow does fall in the capital, it usually occurs in January or February. However, London experienced its first October snowfall since 1934 this year, leading to speculation of a rare White Christmas to come in 2008. Other bookmakers have expanded the criteria to include other European cities, with Irish bookmaker Paddy Power asking, "Where will it snow first in December?" Glasgow is the favorite at 11/10, with London, 8-1, stranded behind rivals Belfast, Dublin and Cardiff. Paris, 12/1, and Madrid, 33/1, are considered unlikely locations for snow.
