The United Kingdom's Gambling Commission has published a player's guide that explains to beginners what to look out for when gambling online.
The four page leaflet, entitled "What to look out for when gambling online", is available via the Commission's website, and advises new gamblers to check thoroughly whether a gambling operator is properly licensed.
Look it up
"A gambling company that is not regulated may not be fair or safe to gamble with," reads the guide. "They may be operating unlawfully and there may be a risk of something going wrong when gambling. Where a gambling company says it is regulated, you can cross-check with the regulator's website to ensure that it is licensed."
The guide also warns of the importance of checking where online gambling services are regulated, pointing out that some companies fall under multiple jurisdictions, such as site where betting is regulated in Britain but casino games are regulated in a second country.
Ensuring fair and open gambling
The Gambling Commission was set up under the Gambling Act 2005 to replace the Gaming Board for Great Britain as the regulator of casinos, bingo, gaming machines and lotteries. It is sponsored by the government's Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS).
According to its website, its main purpose is: keeping crime out of gambling; ensuring gambling is conducted fairly and openly; and protecting children and vulnerable people from being harmed or exploited by gambling.
