The 2010 football World Cup is expected to be the biggest ever betting event in Britain, with local bookmakers expecting to take in more than $1.5 billion in bets. And according to the bookies, the popularity of online betting is part of the reason for the expected growth. An online gambling website created in the name of Fabio Capello to rate individual players has been suspended by the coach of the England national soccer team, according to reports. The "Capello Index" - a joint production by Fabio Capello and an online gambling firm - was shut down following a meeting with Football Association officials after England's exit from the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa. A spokesman for Capello said the Italian agreed to close the project because his demands for all proper protocols to be installed were not met, adding that his involvement in the project "didn't concern the online gaming element of the website." The Capello Index was created to rate individual performances by players, with each player given a mark out of 100 from a system based on 500 different criteria. The website had been tested in the last month, according to a report by Sky News, with six English clubs, three Italian clubs, and two Spanish clubs being tracked under the testing. Meanwhile, Capello's future as coach of England remains unclear, after the team was knocked out of the World Cup via a 4-1 loss to Germany in the round of 16. England finished second in the group stage behind the United States, winning just one game and drawing the other two.
