UK Gambling Commission Watches Out for Players

The United Kingdom's Gambling Commission has published a player's guide that explains to beginners what to look out for when gambling online. The four page leaflet, entitled "What to look out for when gambling online", is available via the Commission's website, and advises new gamblers to check thoroughly whether a gambling operator is properly licensed. Look it up "A gambling company that is not regulated may not be fair or safe to gamble with," reads the guide. "They may be operating unlawfully and there may be a risk of something going wrong when gambling. Where a gambling company says it is regulated, you can cross-check with the regulator's website to ensure that it is licensed." The guide also warns of the importance of checking where online gambling services are regulated, pointing out that some companies fall under multiple jurisdictions, such as site where betting is regulated in Britain but casino games are regulated in a second country. Ensuring fair and open gambling The Gambling Commission was set up under the Gambling Act 2005 to replace the Gaming Board for Great Britain as the regulator of casinos, bingo, gaming machines and lotteries. It is sponsored by the government's Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS). According to its website, its main purpose is: keeping crime out of gambling; ensuring gambling is conducted fairly and openly; and protecting children and vulnerable people from being harmed or exploited by gambling.

UK bookmaker William Hill has launched a range of betting options on what might occur in Britain 2009, including predictions involving Harry Potter, the royal family and Eurovision. Slightly less likely are scenarios such as: 7/4 on The Office star Ricky Gervais to present an Oscar; 2/1 on Robbie Williams to record an album with his old band Take That; 3/1 on the UK to finish last in the 2009 Eurovision song contest; 6/1 on Prince Harry to get engaged; and 7/1 on Prince William or Prince Harry to get married. For those looking for a long-shot, William Hill has what could only be termed more creative options, offering: 8/1 on Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie to both win a golden globe; 16/1 on Posh and Becks to adopt a child; 33/1 on Michael Jackson to appear on reality TV show I'm a Celeb; and 33/1 on an eighth Harry Potter book being published. William Hill's Unluckiest Punter

UK bookmaker William Hill has declared 52-year-old father Philip Greenwood of Barnsley its 'unluckiest punter of 2008' after he changed his mind on the result of a Manchester United-Arsenal clash at the last minute, and cost himself £795,000 ($1.18 million) in the process. The bad luck continued when Greenwood blew a second chance after the bookmaker gave him a free £1000 bet in recognition of the previous mistake. Greenwood was about to put the entire amount on Manchester United to beat Chelsea on the weekend, at odds of 5/4, but changed his mind at the last second to put his money on a horse running at Leopardsown that finished 13th. Manchester United won the football match 3-0. The original losing bet was placed back in March 2008 as part of a £10 accumulator on 14 football matches. On this specific occasion Greenwood got 13 of the winners but altered his final tip of Manchester United to beat Fulham (which was correct), instead backing Arsenal to beat Aston Villa, which ended in a draw. "What can you say?" said William Hill spokesman Rupert Adams after the award was given to Greenwood, "We are in the process of trying to organize a one-horse race for him so he can find out what it is like to win, but with Phil's luck the horse would probably fall. It looks odds-on that he will retain his title in 2009!" Bad luck or bad tactics? In the future, we recommend Philip just go with his gut instincts and put the money down on his first option before changing his mind. Or he could branch out from sports betting and try his luck at William Hill Casino, Poker or Bingo.
