The aim of playing Gin Rummy online for real money is to make as many melds as possible. Melds consist of 3 or more matching cards that can be divided into sets or runs. Unmatched cards are called deadwood and count against you in the scoring round.

Melds consist of two types of card combinations:

• Sets:  These are 3 cards of the same value but different suits.
• Runs:  These are 3 or more cards of the same suit that run in sequence.

What sets Gin Rummy apart from other draw and discard card games is that you can only knock and then present your melds if your deadwood score is 10 or less.

The point value of each card in the deck is as follows:

• Royal cards: 10 points
• Number cards:  Points equal the card number
• Ace: 1 point

At the beginning of the game, the two participating players each dealt a ten-card hand from a standard 52-card deck without any Jokers. The remaining cards are placed in the centre of the table. Then a single card is pulled from the deck and placed face up to create the discard pile.

The player opposite the Dealer, a role that rotates between players with each new game, is the first to draw one card from the stock deck or the discard pile. As each player may only hold ten cards, they must discard a card if they draw one during their turn.

Play continues with participants drawing a card or passing their turn until one has a deadwood score of 10 points or less. Confident players often hold their hands in the pursuit of a zero deadwood score.

A player who wishes to present their melds knocks to end the round and displays their cards split into various runs and sets. When playing online, this option is highlighted by the game showing a Knock button.

Scoring a round of Gin Rummy online works as follows:

1. The knocking player deducts their deadwood card total from their opponents, and the difference is their score for the game.
2. The opponent can reduce their score by laying off deadwood cards onto the knocking players’ melds.
3. It is called an undercut if the knocking player has a higher deadwood score. Now the score is awarded to the opponent plus 25 bonus points.

A game is considered a tie if neither player knocks by the time that there are only two cards left in the stock deck.
