Farewell, Iron Lady (1925-2013)

Divisive during her lifetime and beyond... Baroness Margaret Thatcher continues to polarise the nation even on the event of her death. 

The ex-Prime Minister passed away yesterday aged 87, and whilst some people marked the occasion by paying tribute to the Conservative leader who opened up the free market, other people are holding street parties to bid her "good riddance".

Margaret Thatcher, Europe's first female Prime Minister, was also Britain's most long-serving leader of the 20th Century. The 'Iron Lady' as USSR originally branded her, is perhaps most famous for her role in ending the Cold War,  resisting the idea of a more federal Europe, closing the mines in Northern England, clamping down on trade unions, cutting public services, introducing the Poll Tax. Quite a legacy, which ever way you choose to look at it.

Needless to say, her sudden resignation on 22 November 1990 was one of the most dramatic events in British politics. No one could have been more surprised than she, when her cabinet announced they would not back her in the upcoming elections. This is the stuff of Shakespeare.
