Player Wins £5000 on Losing Bet at William Hill

Whoever thought that a losing bet could be profitable? Well that was exactly the case for one lucky punter that placed a £50 football accumulator bet at William Hill Sportsbook. Steven Steen, a 22-year old punter from Liverpool thought that his bet was a bust before he found out that he had actually won £5000. Steven placed his bet on Barnet, Burton, MK Dons, Watford and the Wolves. Each of those bets won, but his sixth bet on Stoke ended in a 1-1 draw with Sunderland meaning that he had lost. To his surprise and due to the ‘acca insurance’ offered by the UK’s biggest online sportsbook, he was able to get a £50 free bet. His was the bet that took William Hill’s concessionary refunds past the £10 million mark, which rewarded him with his winnings. Over £10m in Refunds His may be a rare case, but literally thousands of punters have been refunded this year and on the same night that Steven won his £5000, 250 other punters were refunded with £20 each. “Our customers have really taken advantage of the concessions that have been on offer and we have handed over £10m worth of free bets this season and there are still a couple of weeks to go,” related William Hill spokesman Joe Crilly. William Hill’s Acca insurance was created in 2011 and includes all Bore Draw, Accumulator and Second Goalscorer bets. On Boxing Day alone, the UK sportsbook rewarded a grand total of £234,300 to punters around the world.   With the NHL and NBA playoffs, as well as the Champions League, Europa League and other major competitions still going strong, special offers like this could be the push that punters need to make extra cash.

Women's New - and Complicated - Relationship with Online Gambling in the UK

In the United Kingdom, gambling used to be solely a man’s pastime. Both the ads and the games themselves were designed to cater to an exclusively male audience. Today, however, marketers in the gambling industry have realized that they have long-neglected an entire audience - an audience that has large revenue-generating potential. That audience, is, of course, women, who today make up a sizable portion of young gamblers in the UK, according to the Gambling Commission. Women’s sudden access to the world of gambling was made possible due to the creation and development of online gambling, whose ads are readily seen online, on television and on every other technological medium. The Difference Between Men and Women’s Gambling While women present a large - and lucrative - audience to online gambling, they are not marketed to the same way that men are. This is because, according to the Gambling Commission, men and women gamble for different reasons. Men enjoy the rush and thrill of winning fast cash; women see online gambling as an enjoyable, leisurely pastime, a way of unwinding after a hectic day. Online gambling statistics reflect these facts: the average female online casino player will spend 21 months gambling in her lifetime, whereas the average male online casino player will spend 14 months gambling in his lifetime. Women spend more time at online casinos because they see it as a leisurely activity; men spend less time because they enjoy the rush that comes from fast-paced thrills. Gambling Ads Targeting Men and Women Online gaming companies recognize that men and women flock to online gambling for different reasons, and thus, their ads are different. UK ads targeting women tend to appear on television during the day, and focus on the social and glitzy aspects of gambling. The message is, “Gamble, unwind, and be fabulous.” Ads that target men tend to appear on television later at night, and they portray the action-packed, fast-paced fun that can be had when men take a risk and dare to win big. The message is, “Gamble, win, and you will be a winner.” Additionally, ads targeting women tend to focus on Bingo, whereas ads targeting men focus on games like blackjack and sports betting. The different games are a result of the different views men and women have on gambling. Women are less concerned with return to player stats; they are more interested in light-hearted, fun games. Men, on the other hand, prefer gambling activities that allow them to exercise some degree of “skill,” even though in reality the games are totally random. (These are, of course, generalizations, to which there are surely exceptions.) Women and Problem Gambling Women who are joining the ranks of online gamblers in the UK tend to be in their late 20s, a point at which they are more financially stable or starting families - the first of which provides them with funds to gamble with, and the second of which provides them with a desire to escape boredom or household chores. The issue, however, is that with more and more women discovering the world of online gambling, more women are also discovering its addictive qualities. According to the Gambling Commission, women account for 25% of gambling addicts in the UK, and the number is probably higher when it comes to online gambling. Some liken the online gambling adverts targeted at women to the cigarette adverts that targeted women in the 1950s and 1960s. Back then, cigarette ads promoted a similar lifestyle that online gambling promotes today - glamour, independence, fun. Today, we know that cigarettes are harmful, and restrictions have been placed on tobacco companies from certain types of advertising. The harmful effects of addictive gambling, however, have not yet been recognized, and ad restrictions have not yet been placed.

Brits Fear Winning Large Lottery Jackpots - But Not That Much

A recent survey conducted in the United Kingdom has yielded some surprising results: 4 out of 10 people think that winning a staggeringly high lottery jackpot would cause more harm than good. The harm, they describe, would come in the form of relationship issues, family feuds, and money-seeking “friends.” The fears are not the same when it comes to winning smaller lottery amounts; according to the survey, conducted by Free Post Code Lottery, Brits are only concerned that very large prizes may have the possibility to destroy their quality of life. The objectivity of the survey, however, has come into question, since the Free Post Code Lottery is a company that offers smaller and more frequent lottos - unlike the UK National Lottery, whose jackpots soar into the millions. The results seem to benefit a company that sells smaller lottery tickets, as opposed to its larger competitors. Are the Concerns Valid? The concerns raised by the survey are not totally invalid; relationship trouble, family disputes and false friends are difficulties that can arise when one wins a life-changing sum of money. However, the same survey shows that the majority of Brits (every 6 out of 10 people) do see the value in winning the lottery: Relief from monetary concerns, putting away savings for children, and generally upgrading the level of their lives. In fact, according to The Telegraph, 70% of UK adults - more than 32 million people - play the lottery on a regular basis. So while some of the population might be disillusioned, the majority is not. Big Lottery Wins With lottery jackpots simply taking off over the past few years, the benefits of winning cannot be easily discounted. Just this April, a record-breaking £35.1 million National Lottery jackpot was won by one person. In January of this year, 2 winners split another record-breaking £66 million prize from the National Lottery. The highest amount ever won was in 2011, when a single player won £161.7 million by playing EuroMillions (a pan-European lottery that is also part of the UK National Lottery). Clearly, Brits have not totally written off the idea that winning huge lotto jackpots is a good thing. We can see this in the odds. The chances of winning a UK National jackpot are approximately 1 in 14 million - which means that millions and millions of lottery tickets are purchased every week. Online Lottery Tickets Have Made the Lotto More Accessible Players no longer need to go to the local convenience store in order to purchase lottery tickets - they can do so with ease without ever leaving their homes, from their PCs or mobile devices. The ability to purchase online lottery tickets has made the lottery even more accessible to Brits who like to play, and the allure of big wins is made even more irresistible when purchasing tickets is so easy. Winners Since the launch of the National Lottery in 1994, over 3,600 people in the UK have become millionaires, all due to winning massive jackpots. And that’s just from the National Lottery - it doesn’t include European and other international lotteries that Brits now have access to - solely due to the availability of online tickets. About the UK National Lottery The National Lottery is the state-franchised national lottery in the UK; it offers a number of games, including Lotto, Lotto Hotpicks, Thunderball, EuroMillions, Scratchcards and online Instant Wins, UK Millionaire Maker, and Millionaire Raffle. All prizes are paid as a tax-free, lump sum. The UK National Lottery does not keep all lottery ticket revenue it brings in; 50% goes to the prize fund, 28% to “good causes,” 12% to the UK government, 5% to retailers and 5% to the operator, Camelot.

New Data Suggests UK Young Adults Are Gambling Less

The UK Gambling Commission’s latest gambling participation survey has suggested that young adults are gambling less than in recent years. There was a significant decline in gambling of any form (excluding lottery) among 18- to 24-year-olds, while the drop was smaller for online gambling. In June’s quarterly survey, it emerged that the proportion of respondents who participated in at least one form of gambling (excluding lottery) fell from 39% to 29% between June 2015 and June 2016. When isolated to online gambling, the decline was not as sharp, falling from 12% to 11% over the same period. A Fall for 18-24s When delving into the statistics, it transpires that the proportions of online gambling participation actually increased across all other age groups aside from 18- to 24-year-olds. Meanwhile, the there was a rise from 17% to 19% among male respondents between June 2015 and June 2016, with female engagement increasing from 12% to 13%. Some gambling operators will be viewing the statistics with doom and gloom, but they need to consider that British young adults are more likely to be exploring other gaming areas than their older counterparts. With more games and apps competing for this age group’s attention, gambling operators will need to improve their communication efforts. Less Disposable Income Another important consideration is that British young adults have less disposable income when compared to the older age groups. In March 2016, the Guardian revealed that UK millennials are worse off than people of their age 30 years ago. From 1979 to 2010, people aged 65-69 and 70-74 have increased their disposable income by an average of 62% and 69%, respectively. Alarmingly, however, 25-29s have experienced a 2% drop over the past three decades. So, with young people aware of the financial struggles facing them in life, they could be gambling less simply because they have less money.
